24-hour ferry service Friday through Sunday | Ferry commuters will be able to enjoy 24-hour service every Friday and the weekends from tomorrow. | The Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) said a ferry would ply at hourly intervals from 11pm to 7am. Six ferries will be in operation from 7am onwards. The round-the-clock ferry service would also be provided on national and state holidays.
State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee Chairman Lim Hock Seng, when contacted said he had been receiving calls from unhappy commuters, adding that he had sent a letter to PPSB to highlight grouses.
| I am glad to hear of the improved service. It is good news for commuters as it would be more convenient for many of them. Car users could save fuel and at the same time get 20 minutes of rest if they use the ferry.
I understand that PPSB has to absorb losses up to RM400 for each trip if a ferry is not fully loaded. I hope the extended service would encourage more people to use it, thus reducing the losses, he said, adding that he hoped that PPSB would not increase the fare.
| The ferry service used to operate on a 24-hour basis until July 1, 2004, when its operating hours were changed to 5.30am to 1am as a measure to cut losses.
